The Western Cape government on Monday urged permanent behavioural change with regard to water use as average dam levels stabilised.
The average level of dams across the province contracted from 48% in 2018 to 47.2% during the same period in 2019.
The City of Cape Town’s dams have reached an average level of 61.4%, up from the 54.7% reported in 2018.
“The resource will always be under pressure in years to come and we must all do that we can to use less,” reiterated Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Minister Anton Bredell.
“We are talking about permanent behaviour change to ensure we build a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
The Gouritz river catchment area, which feeds large parts of the Karoo, continues to be the area of most concern.
Despite some regions, such as Beaufort-West, having received decent rainfall in their catchment areas, other areas have not yet seen the relief they need.
“A source of concern remains the agricultural sector in large parts of the province where the ongoing drought that has been prevalent for more than four years, remains in effect,” he explained.
