Traxtion refurbishes, adds 5 Transnet class 39 locomotives to fleet of 60 in eight African countries

Private rail operator and services company Traxtion has refurbished five class 39 locomotives it bought from State-owned Transnet at its workshop in Rosslyn, Gauteng. This is part of its fleet expansion to meet the growing demand for freight rail services in Africa.

"Traxtion is preparing for the next phase of adding new locomotives to the fleet. We now have a fleet of 60 locomotives and are operating in eight African countries," the company said in a statement this week.

In rebuilding the class 39s for market, the locomotives underwent a six-yearly major inspection, which included the evaluation and overhaul of all major and critical components. This ensured that any underlying faults were detected and addressed to reduce the chances of future breakdowns.

The powerful 2 250 kW, or 3 000 hp, locomotives underwent major overhauls, refurbishments and modifications. Technicians at the Rosslyn facility also accessed and stripped other major components to bring them back to full operational standards.

Further, as part of the six-month project, the locomotives also underwent a weight reduction intervention to enable them to operate optimally on standard African tracks.

The body and tank weight were reduced so that the locomotives could transport more tonnes per load without breaching the regional axle load limits or damaging the infrastructure, the company said.

Some of the other work done on the class 39s included refurbishment of fuel injectors, and engine water and oil pumps, as well as replacement of turbo chargers. Additional work also included refurbishing the entire brake system, conducting load testing, reprofiling the wheels and refurbishing the AP bearings, Traxtion said.
