South Africans must work flat out to finalise green hydrogen commercialisation strategy

Green hydrogen has holistic use and long-term storage benefits in a world needing zero emission. It can clean up industry, shipping, manufacturing, road transport and probably air transport as well. We must thus work flat out to finalise our green hydrogen commercialisation strategy.

Earlier this month, Toyota, Air Products and Sasol showed leadership in putting a green-hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) through its paces. Then last week, Anglo American Platinum, BMW and Sasol signed a collaboration agreement to bring FCEVs on to the road and support them with hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.

Simultaneously, the three Cape provinces teamed up to position South Africa as a global hub for the production of green hydrogen and its derivative products such as green ammonia. The big need now is for the long-awaited Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy, a public sector responsibility, to be finalised. Top of mind should be that energy sovereignty through green hydrogen and fuel cells can do the country the world of good.
