The March addition of a commercial contract with Austria’s A1 marks Nokia’s thirtieth fifth-generation (5G) deal, spanning the full end-to-end spectrum of 5G technologies across major global regions.

The 30 commercial deals – including 16 with publically named service provider customers – offer insight into the progress of 5G roll-outs globally and illustrate the value that network operators see in the technology.

“With these agreements, creating new partnerships and continuing existing relationships around the world, we can see the promise of 5G becoming a reality,” says Nokia CEO and president Rajeev Suri.

The agreements also demonstrate Nokia’s extensive portfolio of 5G capabilities.

“Many of the 30 commercial 5G deals we celebrate today include multiple elements from across our end-to-end portfolio, as our customers turn to Nokia at each stage of their 5G investment cycle.

[The year] 2019 will be a big year for 5G, and Nokia stands ready and able to deliver for customers everywhere. “[Fifth-generation technology] is truly transformational . . . [and] will improve people’s lives, increase productivity and efficiency and enhance the sustainability of our planet.”

Where operators are looking for the capability to quickly deploy new 5G capacity and speed to their existing network, Nokia 5G radio can be deployed regardless of the incumbent 4G network vendor, says Nokia Bell Labs fellow Harri Holma, adding that Nokia’s 5G product suite, equipped with a comprehensive portfolio of small cells and macro solutions, is designed to offer operators the flexibility and capability to deliver 5G to many types of end-users.

Through the group’s capabilities, operators are able to offer low-latency, high-throughput, content-rich services – and can integrate their 5G builds alongside existing second-, third- and fourth-generation radio and fixed-access networks.

“Nokia’s momentum in 5G agreements shows that its end-to-end strategy with a broad range of technology solutions is working,” says ACG Wireless & Mobility principal analyst Chris Nicoll in a statement issued by Nokia.

“Service providers on the journey to 5G are at different stages of maturity and it is crucial that vendors in this market are prepared to support that full journey – not just part of the way,” he adds.

Suri says 5G is expected to “change everything, every industry, every business and every consumer experience”, powering “massive” broadband applications, while creating unprecedented opportunities.

“We are pushing forward faster than anyone else because we want Nokia customers to deliver the 5G experience first,” Suri says.

Among the 30 commercial 5G deals are A1 Austria; US-based AT&T; Japan’s Docomo; Optus, of Australia; South Africa-based Rain; Salt, of Switzerland; Sprint, of the US; Saudi Telecom Company, of Saudi Arabia; Denmark’s Telenor Group; Telia Company, of Finland; TIM San Marino; US-based T-Mobile; US Cellular; and Vodafone Italy.

Nokia has made several product and service announcements that further enhance and strengthen its 5G end-to-end portfolio, including the acceleration of its 5G roll-out with the launch of fixed-wireless access FastMile 5G Gateway; enhancements to its packet core and radio-access network solutions announced in conjunction with the industry’s first 5G Maturity Index; additions to Nokia’s AirScale small cells portfolio; and enhancements to Nokia’s Anyhaul transport portfolio.

Further, the company is opening a network of cognitive collaboration hubs and expanding its Wing offering with new Internet of Things applications.

In line with this, Nokia and Korea Telecom are conducting 5G trials for service automation, network virtualisation and slicing, and Nokia and Optus are establishing multiple “world firsts” with the 5G roll-out in Australia.

Nokia and Vodafone are also collaborating on active antennas to boost 5G radio capacity and reduce costs, while Bharti Airtel is set to trial Nokia’s 5G-ready front-haul solution.
