Telecommunications infrastructure firm Helios Towers Tanzania (HTT) is acquiring all mainland unique telecoms tower sites from Zanzibar Telecom (Zantel) for an undisclosed amount.

The acquisition will bring the Helios Towers Africa (HTA) subsidiary’s telecoms tower sites in Tanzania to around 3 700 owned towers.

“This acquisition reaffirms HTA’s commitment to drive increased infrastructure sharing, thereby reducing the costs incurred by mobile operators to deliver vital telecoms services that support economic growth, social development and job creation in local communities,” said HTA CEO Kash Pandya in a statement.

The deal allows HTT to enhance its network coverage, increase the quality of service, facilitate lower consumer prices and reduce capital, maintenance and operating costs for mobile services providers.

The Tanzanian authorities have granted regulatory approval for the acquisition.

Under a separate services agreement, HTT and Zantel will also decommission any duplicate towers to reduce the environmental impact of telecoms services and improve operational efficiencies.

“The acquisition and the decommissioning of duplicate infrastructure will help operators meet growing consumer demand while ensuring network expansion is done in a sustainable and responsible way,” said Pandya.

“This is part of a wide set of transformational initiatives that Zantel has carried out since its acquisition by Millicom group in 2015. With this sale and ongoing relationship with Helios Towers, Zantel will streamline its infrastructure costs and improve the overall efficiency of the market,” concluded Zantel CEO Sherif El-Barbary.
