BioTherm connects another wind farm to national grid
Pan-African renewable energy project developer BioTherm Energy’s 120 MW Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility, in the Eastern Cape, has become the latest wind farm to be connected to the national grid.
“We are pleased to announce the successful commissioning of all 48 wind turbine generators as the year draws to an end and we prepare to have our portfolio in operation in the next quarter,” says BioTherm CEO Robert Skjodt.
The plant is expected to generate over 477 GWh/y of renewable power and has been built by a team comprising 98% South Africans.
Located about 5 km from Cookhouse, on 9 000 ha of farm land, this wind farm is connected to the grid through an on-site substation and a dedicated 132 kV power line connecting to the Kopleegte substation.
BioTherm, which is wholly owned by emerging markets investor Actis, has a portfolio of five projects in Africa.
Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility is owned by BioTherm (60%), Thebe Investment Corporation (37.5%) and a local community trust (2.5%).
