Joburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry opens export, import manager training programme

The Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) has opened applications for its virtual export and import management training programme, which has been specifically designed to develop highly skilled export and import managers.

The initiative, which is set to start on January 24, directly responds to the urgent need for adept professionals in the rapidly evolving landscape of international trade, says JCCI CEO Bernadette Zeiler.

This represents a strategic investment in the province’s economic future for the business community in Gauteng, she adds.

“Gauteng’s success in international trade is pivotal to the nation’s overall economic health. By fostering a cadre of well-trained professionals, this programme is set to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of trade operations, thereby boosting the region's competitive edge in the global market,” says Zeiler.

The course offers an in-depth exploration of the rules of origin - the rules to attribute a country of origin to a product to determine its economic nationality - which are crucial in navigating free trade agreements (FTAs) and generalised system of preferences (GSPs).

FTAs and GSPs promote economic development by eliminating duties on thousands of products imported from designated beneficiary countries and territories, the Chamber says.

Focusing on the practical application of these regulations aims to equip participants with the essential expertise to thrive in the complex world of global trade, Zeiler adds.

The curriculum of the programme covers vital areas such as the certification of certificates of origin and commercial documents, analysis of source documentation, certification compliance and handling related queries.

This comprehensive approach ensures professionals well-versed in theory and also prepared to tackle real-world challenges effectively, she says.

“The course’s emphasis on practical skills aligns perfectly with the evolving demands of international trade and ensures that Gauteng’s businesses comply with global standards and are at the forefront of trade innovation. This initiative highlights our commitment to strengthening the region’s trade capabilities by making it an essential development for every business leader and professional in the field to consider.

“This is an opportunity for those looking to elevate their expertise in global trade and contribute to the economic fortitude of Gauteng and South Africa,” says Zeiler.
