Umgeni Water to cooperate with SIU on investigation
Under a proclamation issued by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is preparing to undertake an investigation into various allegations of infractions at Umgeni Water, in KwaZulu-Natal.
Umgeni Water on Wednesday said the SIU would receive its full cooperation and the required support to enable it to conduct its work without hindrance and also bring to finality matters under scrutiny.
“Notwithstanding the allegations as reflected in the Presidential Proclamation, Umgeni Water assures its stakeholders that the entity remains stable, resilient [and] properly governed and continuously improves its internal processes to align to best practices and remains committed to full legal compliance,” the authority said in a statement.
“The entity’s financial and nonfinancial performance continues to improve, ensuring that the entity’s ability to execute its mandate brings confidence to all its stakeholders,” it continued.
The proclamation, dated February 1, refers to allegations of serious maladministration; improper and unlawful conduct by board members, officials and employees; unlawful appropriation or expenditure; unlawful, irregular or unapproved acquisitive acts; intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property; offences under Chapter 2 of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act; and unlawful or improper conduct by any person which has caused or may cause serious harm to the interests of the public.
