Energy efficiency is critical to sustaining smart cities, especially amid increasing urbanisation. Consequently, the lighting industry’s focus seems to have shifted from replaceable lighting to special niche lighting, which includes aspects of smart lighting and the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

In line with the trend towards using smart products, 135 companies are expected to showcase state-of-the-art lighting solutions at the Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS), which will run from May 8 to 10 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Centre, in Taiwan.

The event is expected to further drive Taiwan’s lighting output value growth and set new transaction records.

In particular, with the world’s LED lighting output rapidly growing and the application scope continually expanding, organic LED has exhibited some unique advantages and is expected to become the new focus in Taiwan’s lighting sector. In an organic LED, the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current.

The show is an opportunity for Taiwan’s manufacturers to exhibit lighting solutions that integrate wireless connections and positioning systems, and even incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) platform.

Power supply manufacturer Mean Well Enterprises intends to take advantage of China’s economic slowdown and will showcase its newly launched XLG Series, ranging from 25 W to 240 W.

With the official product launch intended for March, the XLG Series covers up to 80% of all outdoor lighting applications and can operate in temperatures of –40 ºC to –90 ºC.

Professional capacitor manufacturer Team Young Technology, which will also exhibit at TILS, will launch another member of its Ezcon family, the TX Control Systems, during the first quarter of 2019.

Employing radio-frequency technology for control, the TX Control System enables users to easily manage an environment, regardless of a complicated layout and without the need for any WiFi or Internet network operation.

The system can be used in a large-scale environment or residential home application, and eliminates the need to pull the cable to the wall in a traditional switch, enabling the user to manually control a power switch from a distance of up to 100 m. The system boasts a number of features, including the option to independently name any light switch, while hierarchical groups can be arranged to facilitate the remote control.

Meanwhile, another TILS exhibitor, LED-focused manufacturer Beautiful Light Technology Corporation (BLTC), is taking a different approach to ease-of-use by integrating its lighting product line to work with Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa, or remote control.

Despite being slightly weary of expanding into Africa because of customer cost concerns, BLTC is enthusiastic about the Bluetooth connection and remote-control capabilities of its product lines.

BLTC’s IoT series, which has the added option of a camera installation or colour-changing capabilities, has 22 options available.

Also exhibiting at the show, industrial lighting company ShinyU Lighting Company believes that “energy saving and carbon reduction are everyone’s responsibility . . . to save the earth”.

To achieve this, the company incorporates Vapor Chamber technology and combines it with convection cooling structures to create a new life-time expectancy of more than 6 000 h.

This focus on cooling technology improvement and development, combined with environment-friendly energy-saving products, led to ShinyU’s introduction of diverse and optimised glass optical lenses to create the highest-efficiency LEDs and ensure maximise use.

TILS is expected to attract more than 12 000 buyers in May, with nearly 1 000 international buyers from more than 40 countries expected to visit the show.
