The board of directors of State-owned national flag carrier South African Airways (SAA) issued an assurance on Monday that “it does not condone nor will it cover up any acts of impropriety at SAA”. This followed the publication of a series of stories in the media about the airline, which the board believes to be based on leaked internal SAA reports. However, it cautioned that “[a]ny action the board could take against anyone accused of criminality must have factual basis and be legally sustainable”.

In its statement to the media, the board said that it had examined these reports and they are incomplete and have to be finalised. This process, which involves obtaining the responses of the executive management and all the affected parties, is now under way. “This is not only standard practice, but a requirement of natural justice.”

The reports were commissioned by SAA to examine its financial losses. They have been focused on such areas as procurement (especially the negotiation and management of contracts) and the management of assets. Once they are completed, they will be submitted to the board, which will then consider them and take action.

“We caution against making conclusions hastily and discourage casting aspersions against any individuals on the strength of incomplete reports,” affirms the statement. The board will inform the nation of the outcomes and any action necessary once the outstanding work has been concluded and the final reports tabled.”
