North-West University (NWU) School of Business and Governance (SBG) has secured a five-year international accreditation for its new MBA degree programme from the London-based Association of MBAs (AMBA).

The five-year accreditation period, the longest period of endorsement for an MBA degree accreditation by the association, followed an on-site assessment process from October 18 to 19.

“The fact that the NWU SBG introduced a new MBA at the beginning of 2016, as well as the fact that the two business schools at the NWU merged, made this task exceptionally challenging,” said NWU SBG director Professor Tommy du Plessis.

The business school had made substantial progress, fulfilling many of its ambitious plans while addressing AMBA recommendations, since its last assessment three years ago.

Du Plessis explained that the AMBA noted the successful unification of the three campuses; the enhanced teaching and learning space achieved through the new school building; and that all stakeholders had a positive impression of their interactions with the school, besides others.

The business school was previously assessed in 2013, when it was still the Potchefstroom Business School, and had secured a three-year accreditation.

The next full reassessment of the MBA provision at the school will be undertaken in October 2021.
