Motion and control technologies provider Parker Hannifin Corporation’s industrial gas filtration and generation division launched an important new patent for the metalworking industry.

Announced in August, the patent is designed to optimise drainage within the SmogHog SHM Machine Mount self-contained media mist collector and provide best in class particulate removal efficiency and long filter life using high-quality coalescing filter media technology.

The patent includes an area that supports the industrial filter elements, sealing the upper and lower plates of the filter, a liquid collection area, and a reservoir in the base section to drain away the liquid that coalesces during operation.

Suspended liquids collect and coalesce on the fibre structure of the filter, the droplet size grows, and gravity drains the contaminants from the airstream and out of the filter into the collection area.

The media used within this proprietary design provides an open three-dimensional depth matrix structure that separates the liquid droplets from the airstream, into three airflow paths, radial, axial and helical, removing 99% of contaminants.

Air passes directly through the thickness of the media, impacting on the fibre structure and removing the contaminant; the media then forces a great amount of the airflow to take a stair-step path improving particle removal and the third path creates a corkscrew pattern that increases dwell time and resulting particle capture.

“This invention joins many other industry leading patents we have brought to industrial filtration,” says Parker Hannifin industrial air filtration product development engineer Jeff Canfield, listing Preveil, PulsePleats, and ProTura, to name a few.

“This media technology is built into a tubular arrangement, as this, coupled with the SHM three-stage filtration process will see our customers experience a 99% reduction in mist concentration.”

The three-stage process includes a mist-stop prefilter; a fine fibre, aluminium mesh prefilter that reduces mist concentration and coarse contaminants; a primary filter engineered with Peach coalescing cartridges; and the final stage, a safety after-filter available in Ashrae 95% oil mist rates filter or high-efficiency particulate air filter configurations. This patent is known as US Patent US-2018-0339255-A1.
