Global miner Glencore has announced the retirement of board member Peter Coates effective May 29, after a 30-year association with Glencore.

He joined the Glencore board in 2011 and has served as chairperson of the health and safety committee.

The company has appointed John Wallington as independent nonexecutive director effective June 1, bringing to the board more than 40 years of experience in the mining industries of South Africa, Australia, Colombia and Canada.

He spent more of his career at Anglo American, including as global CEO of Anglo Coal.

Glencore chairperson Kalidas Madhavpeddi comments that it is crucial that the company have several nonexecutive directors who know the industry well and who can appraise and challenge decision-making from a technical and commercial perspective.
