Atlas Copco is passionate about promoting positive mental and physical health amongst its employees. Recognising the need to bring awareness to testicular and prostate cancer, the company once again supported the Movember initiative throughout the month of November culminating in a highly successful event hosted for male employees.

“For a second consecutive year we decided to support the worthy Movember initiative to encourage men to open up to each other and share their problems and solutions and to let them know that they are not alone,” states Bongani Ndlovu, Atlas Copco Corporate Social Responsibility Manager and Executive Assistant.

“We also want to spread awareness of the different types of cancers that affect men as well as to share preventative methods.”

The response to the initiative was extremely enthusiastic. This year saw an increase in the number of employees that grew moustaches compared to 2018 and thirty six men from Atlas Copco attended the Movember event on 28 November 2019.

After a game of table soccer, proceedings took on a more serious note with Sean Zimunya from the Reality Wellness Program delivering an informative presentation on prostate, testicular, colon, rectal and breast cancer. He also discussed the various stages of cancer and twenty eight employees took full advantage of the opportunity to undergo a prostate-specific antigen test.

Brandon Oelofse, Regional General Manager at Atlas Copco’s Industrial Technique business area notes that it was great to have the Atlas Copco Movember event as part of the company’s annual calendar again.

“The attendance continues to grow, which really shows that the men in our company appreciate and see the value of learning about their health. Over and above this, we all benefited from some bonding time as men, which is important as well. It was an overall great event and you will definitely see me again in 2020.”

Each Atlas Copco attendee also purchased a raffle ticket and all funds raised were donated to the Movember organisation which is changing the face of men’s health by tackling issues such as prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. According to the organisation, the last fifty years saw testicular cancer rates double while prostate cancer rates are expected to increase two-fold over the next fifteen years.

Atlas Copco is honoured to a part of Movember and will continue to encourage a culture of healthy bodies and minds amongst its male employees. “It is my hope that this movement will continue to grow from strength-to-strength to the ultimate benefit of men everywhere.

I would like men to start engaging in relevant issues. I believe that my colleagues are my family and that I should feel comfortable and free to approach any of my brothers to ask for guidance and support. Most often all we need is someone to listen,” concludes Bongani.
